Two otter pups at London Zoo have made their exciting debut in the water, marking what keepers describe as “a significant milestone.”
These Asian short-clawed otters, born in January, spent their initial months cozying up in a nesting box while nursing with their first-time mother, Midge.
According to the zoo, the recent warm weather has encouraged the adventurous siblings to explore their enclosure and even attempt some underwater dives.
Otter keeper Amy McKillop expressed her enthusiasm, stating that watching the pups enter the water was “truly thrilling.”
The young otters have been closely monitored by zookeepers eager to see when Midge and their father, Siyam, would feel comfortable allowing the pups to experience their first swim.
Although their genders remain undetermined and they have yet to be named, these pups are part of a European breeding program aimed at protecting this vulnerable species, which is threatened by habitat loss in the wild.
Veterinary confirmation of their sexes will be possible once they mature and gain more independence.
Ms. McKillop noted how much the duo has “grown significantly” over the past few weeks, highlighting their emerging curiosity and boundless energy. “It’s wonderful to witness their development so closely, and seeing them splash around in the water is just fantastic.”
