Washington imposes visa restrictions on Cuban officials.
The United States has expanded its existing policy of visa restrictions on a number of current and former Cuban officials. The officials in question are those associated with the employment programme that sends Cuban professionals to work abroad, particularly health care workers. Secretary of State Marco Rubio made the announcement on Tuesday, Voice of America reported.
Rubio said in his statement that the expanded restrictions target individuals and their immediate family members believed to be responsible for the program, which the secretary of state called ‘forced labour.’ He added that the US has already imposed restrictions on several individuals, including Venezuelan nationals.
‘Cuba’s labour export programs, which include medical missions, enrich the Cuban regime, and in the case of Cuba’s overseas medical missions, deprive ordinary Cubans of the medical care they desperately need back home,’ Rubio said.
The State Department statement said the Cuban regime’s forced labour practices are ‘well documented’.
The department stresses that the U.S. is ‘committed to combating forced labour practices around the world.’
Relations between the United States and Cuba have remained tense since the 1959 revolution brought Fidel Castro to power. The island has been subject to a U.S. trade embargo for several decades.
