EDINBURGH, Scotland (AP) — Scotland has secured another so-called “Kilted Kiwi” in its rugby squad.
Fergus Burke, a New Zealand-born flyhalf, was named Wednesday in Scotland’s enlarged 37-man squad for the Six Nations tournament that starts next month.
The 25-year-old Burke plays his club rugby for Saracens, after joining the English giant last year from the Crusaders in New Zealand, where he was regarded as the protege of Richie Mo’unga.
Burke was eligible to play international rugby for the All Blacks, England — courtesy of his mother, who is English — and Scotland, for whom he qualifies through the lineage of his Glasgow-born grandfather.
He has chosen Scotland and could make his debut in the country’s Six Nations opener, against Italy on Feb. 1.
The Scots already have a star flyhalf in Finn Russell.
