The New York Yankees are trying to move on after having to watch superstar outfielder Juan Soto leave them in free agency for the New York Mets after agreeing to a 15-year, $765 million deal that has left a massive void in the outfield for the Yanks.
New York has moved quickly to pick up the pieces and signed left-handed starter Max Fried to an 8-year, $218 million deal, but the Yankees are far from finished and made another big move on Friday morning.
On Friday, the Yankees acquired superstar closer Devin Williams from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for lefty starter Nestor Cortes and minor-league infielder Caleb Durbin, prompting many of the same reactions from fans.

It’s a big upgrade for the Yankees, as Williams carries a career 1.83 ERA and a 39.4 percent strikeout rate.
The concerns are that Williams has one year left on his contract and comes with some injury concerns after he missed the first half of the 2024 season with a lower back injury, though he looked like his usual dominant self upon returning.
He has also had his share of playoff woes, but it’s a small sample size and not enough to deter the Yankees.
Cortes became expendable after the Fried signing, and Durbin is about to turn 25 and likely didn’t factor into the team’s long-term plans anyway, so it’s a strong move by the Yankees to bring in one of the best closers in the game.
He’ll be an upgrade over Clay Holmes, who recently signed with the Mets and will likely convert to a starter.
