LJUBLJANA, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) — Slovenia’s government announced a six-month extension of internal Schengen border checks with Croatia and Hungary, currently in place until Dec. 21.
The decision, aimed at addressing heightened terrorism threats, ensures a high level of security, according to the Government Communication Office (UKOM).
The police will carry out controls at border crossing points in a way that will have a minimal impact on the flow of passengers, the environment and business, and in particular on the lives of the people living in border regions, UKOM said.
Slovenia introduced controls at its borders with Croatia and Hungary on Oct. 21 last year due to the deteriorating security situation in the Middle East and the increased threat of terrorism.
Slovenia will notify Europan Union (EU) member states, the European Commission, and the European Parliament, in accordance with Article 27 of the Schengen Borders Code, UKOM said.
Italy and Austria have both implemented border controls with Slovenia. On Wednesday, Italy announced a six-month extension of its checks, previously set to end on Dec. 18. Austria’s border controls with Slovenia will continue until May 11, 2025.
