TRINIDAD and Tobago’s Em-Miryam Campbell-Smith captured her second 16 and under and sixth overall United States Tennis Association (USTA) title in Florida on Sunday.
After comfortably winning three first-to-eight matches the day before, the No. 2 seed whipped Hulya Ozdogan 6-4, 6-2 in the final.
Campbell-Smith, who has been based at “HITT” since September last year, did not have to play a title match for her first 16 and under crown last month, as rain washed out the last day and she won a best-of-three coin-toss for gold.
The two-time East Classified Division B champion lifted her first 14 and under trophy a few weeks after relocating, and then three more from four tournaments in January.
Campbell-Smith, who won a match in a women’s open tournament in Florida the weekend before, captured her first 18 and under title in an International Tennis Federation (ITF) tournament in Nicaragua in early August.
The 14-year-old played two ITF tournaments in the Dominican Republic last month and her highlight performance was a straight-sets victory over the American she had beaten in the coin toss for a place in the quarter-finals of the first.
Campbell-Smith, who reached as high as No. 2 in the Central America and the Caribbean Tennis Confederation (COTECC) two years ago, is currently the second highest ranked T&T female at #1,914 in the ITF standings.
