The United States of America has the world’s largest economy, largest military, protects global shipping and trade lanes and is the de facto leader of shaping global policy and protecting democracy and freedom.

After observing the last four years of the administration of former US President Donald Trump and the shameful way in which he left office, we deemed him unfit to ever again lead that nation – a beacon of hope and prosperity – that borders and often aids and protects our own.

Yet even though a majority of Americans openly acknowledge Trump’s many flaws, on Tuesday, the majority of the US electorate chose to place him in power once again.

Much of what occurs in the US matters here, even though we are a sovereign nation.

We not only rely on it for tourism, without which our economy would be in tatters, but we also rely on it for countless other things – goods, food, healthcare, education and merchant banking relationships to name a few.

The vast majority of Americans are honest, hard-working people who have strong values and love their country – that they would place a man of Trump’s character back in the Oval Office should not reflect poorly on them.

After all, they booted him out of office once before.

However, economic conditions and immigration concerns clearly overtook any misgivings his base and undecided voters had about him.

The Democrats must also soul-search about their own brand of politics and their critical mistake of waiting so long to force Joe Biden to step aside as the candidate this year.

It must also consider that its agenda was perhaps too progressive, and it did not explain the benefit of some of its more sensible policy achievements.

The US economy is roaring, inflation is cooling, the stock market is reaching all-time highs and wages are increasing.

However, housing and food prices are high, and immigration is a real concern as asylum seekers overwhelm the US states that border Mexico.

Trump is 78 years old and cannot legally run for president after his next term.

But that does not mean he will be unable to wreak havoc.

The war in Ukraine persists and it is unclear if America’s support will waver in the face of Russian President Vladmir Putin’s aggression.

Conflicts in Israel and Palestine are ongoing and there is rising tension in the rest of the Middle East.

Trump has pledged to mass deport tens of millions of people.

He has said he will deport tens of thousands of Haitian migrants living in the United States legally under temporary protected status.

He has promised to go after his political enemies.

He has promised to fire US military generals who are not feal to him rather than the constitution to whom they swore an oath.

And he has promised to impose widespread tariffs on imported goods that would be inflationary on the US economy and ours; not to mention his open aggression and attacks on the media for standard coverage and critique.

During his victory speech in Florida Tuesday night, Trump said he will keep his word.

And after surviving two assassination attempts along the campaign trail this year, he said he will work to restore America to greatness.

“I said that many people have told me that God spared my life for a reason,” he said.

“And that reason was to save our country and to restore America to greatness. And now we are going to fulfill that mission together. We’re going to fulfill that mission.

“The task before us will not be easy, but I will bring every ounce of energy, spirit, and fight that I have in my soul to do the job that you’ve entrusted to me. This is a great job. There’s no job like this. This is the most important job in the world.

“Just as I did in my first term; we had a great first time a great, great first time.

“I will govern by a simple motto ‘promises made, promises kept’.

“We’re going to keep our promises. Nothing will stop me from keeping my word to you the people.”

We hope that the other branches of government will hold him to account and temper his worst impulses.

Trump may be a disaster, or he may have a tremendous positive impact on America and the world.

The Bahamas and the United States will continue to partner in friendship; our bonds are too tight.

America has made its choice.

And to be clear: America was already great.
