In October, Ole Miss Athletics is teaming up with the Hilinski’s Hope Foundation to participate in Student-Athlete Mental Health Week. This initiative will run from October 5th to 12th, coinciding with Mental Illness Awareness Week (October 1st-7th) and culminating with World Mental Health Day on October 10th.
This partnership is part of the fifth annual SAMHW, which brings together more than 250 schools and organizations to collectively address the mental well-being of student athletes and honor those who have lost their lives.
Dr. Josie Nicholson, Assistant Athletics Director for Sport Psychology at Ole Miss, highlighted the importance of this week in sending a message to athletes that they are valued as more than just players, and that they are not alone in their struggles. The activities planned during this week aim to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness and promote self-care throughout the year.
Ole Miss has various initiatives lined up for SAMHW. The volleyball team will host a mental health awareness day on Sunday, October 6th against LSU. Fans are encouraged to wear green in support of Hilinski’s Hope, and there will be a giveaway of light-up wristbands. Additionally, when the soccer team faces South Carolina on Sunday, October 13th at 2 p.m., they will be giving away green ribbons and thundersticks as part of their own mental health awareness day.
