The Russian military has completely reclaimed the Kursk region along the border from Ukrainian forces, Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov reported to President Vladimir Putin on Saturday.
Kyiv had anticipated leveraging land in the Kursk area as a negotiating tool in potential peace discussions with Russia, which has taken control of sections in eastern and southern Ukraine since launching its offensive in 2022.
“Today, the final village in the Kursk region, Gornal, has been liberated from Ukrainian troops,” Gerasimov stated during a video conference with Putin.
“The escapade of the Kyiv regime has utterly failed,” Putin remarked to Gerasimov, expressing gratitude to the soldiers for their service and stating that the liberation of Kursk will pave the way for further progress at other areas along the front.
Russian forces are now stationed at the border and are likely to increase threats to Ukraine’s Sumy region, which lies opposite Kursk, where Moscow has already conducted incursions in recent weeks.
Gerasimov particularly praised the “bravery” of the North Korean soldiers participating in the operation, noting that they “provided substantial support in defeating the Ukrainian armed forces.”
South Korean and Western intelligence agencies indicate that over 10,000 North Korean soldiers were dispatched to Russia last year to assist Moscow in countering Ukraine’s rapid offensive in Kursk.
