Historically, Easter has been associated with the tradition of donning new attire. Following the period of sacrifice during Lent, this occasion offered a chance to revel in elegance, symbolizing the arrival of a renewed self.
In his 1662 diary entries, Samuel Pepys mentioned purchasing new clothing for his wife in anticipation of Easter, while in Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet,” Mercutio humorously inquires whether someone quarreled with a tailor for sporting his new outfit prior to Easter Sunday.
Wearing new clothes to church for the first time was deemed fortunate, and many would exhibit their fresh ensembles by taking a leisurely stroll through town, giving rise to the concept of the Easter parade.
However, when a complete outfit wasn’t financially feasible, a freshly styled hat was considered an adequate substitute.
This viewpoint was supported by the then London Tourist Board, which happily organized annual Easter Bonnet contests.
So, take a moment to observe.
