This weekend, hundreds of thousands from the Sikh community will celebrate Vaisakhi throughout London.

Referred to also as Baisakhi, this festival commemorates the establishment of the Sikh order known as the Khalsa in 1699.

Initially, it served as a harvest festival in the Punjab area of India before evolving into the most significant celebration for Sikhs.

In East London, which is home to approximately 90,000 Sikhs, many gathered for a festive event in Newbury Park, Ilford, on Saturday, enjoying music, performances, delicious food, and booths featuring traditional jewelry and attire.

Joydeep Das, the event organizer, described Vaisakhi as “a wonderful spring festival” and emphasized that the celebration was open to everyone, inviting all to join in the festivities.

Historically, spring was welcomed with rituals like cutting grass and harvesting crops, followed by feasting.

The gathering also serves as an opportunity for community bonding.

Mr. Das remarked, “While it primarily caters to the Sikh community, it’s not exclusively for them… and the Sikh community truly enjoys these celebrations.”

People look forward to occasions like this to come together and celebrate.

One attendee expressed her delight, stating, “It’s really wonderful. The entire community has come together, and the stalls are lovely. We’re meeting new people.”
