Former Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, April 14, 2023, in Tokyo. At a man was sentenced on Wednesday, February 19, to ten years in prison for attempted assassination, for having launched, in April 2023, an artisanal explosive device to Japanese Prime Minister of the fumio Kishida, a spokesperson for the Wakayama court. Ryuji Kimura, 24 at the time, was arrested after throwing an explosive device towards Fumio Kishida, while the Prime Minister visited a small fishing port in the Wakayama department, 85 kilometers from Osaka, to support a candidate from his party in elections. Two people had been slightly injured, and Fumio Kishida came out unscathed. The prosecution had requested a fifteen -year sentence. The defense had argued for a three -year sentence, advancing that the accused had not intended to kill the Prime Minister. During the trial, the lawyers for Ryuji Kimura claimed that his “objective was to draw attention” and not to commit a murder attempt. The prosecutors, however, described the incident as a “malicious terrorist act” and said that the aggressor knew that his explosive was potentially deadly. This attack had caused a shock wave in a country haunted by the assassination, in July 2022, of the predecessor of Fumio Kishida, Shinzo Abe, killed by bullets when he delivered an electoral speech to Nara.
