Scotland captain Finn Russell has been blasted after posing for a photograph while wearing an England shirt just moments after missing a last-gasp conversion at Twickenham.
A late drive to the line from Duhan van der Merwe looked as if it would be enough for Scotland to confirm a third consecutive victory against England on opposition soil, with the scoreboard reading 16-15 in the hosts’ favour.
With next to no time left on the clock, all Russell needed to do was convert his team-mates try to secure the extra two points and win the game for Scotland.
What followed, as far as Scottish fans were concerned, was the stuff of nightmares.
Russell’s long-range effort eeked just past the post, meaning England were spared late embarrassment and Scotland had to settle for a loss.
It proved an agonising end to a frustrating afternoon for Russell, who in the first half twice missed conversions for Scotland tries.
Six missing points that would’ve surely won the game and the Calcutta Cup for the Bravehearts.
But the salt for Scotland fans was rubbed in the wounds even more after the match when Russell was snapped wearing an England shirt belonging to fellow Bath star Ollie Lawrence.
The photo, which was posted to Bath’s official X account, didn’t go down well, with Scotland supporters berating their skipper.
@glove931 commented: “Finn’s kicking no longer the worst thing he did today.”
@FM1872 added: “Personally I wouldn’t wear an England top minutes after missing a conversion to win a match.”
@adam___74 simply said: “Embarrassing.”
Russell might feel as if he’s got some making-up to do in Scotland’s next match against Wales, but according to coach Gregor Townsend, his errors have already been quickly forgotten.
Speaking after the match, he said: “We scored three tries and will look back and think we could have scored more. In a lot of ways it was a better performance than we’ve had down here when we’ve won.
“England defended very well. They are very good in their own 22. Credit goes to them. With that amount of possession we’re normally good at converting into points. Today we didn’t do that often enough.
“Finn was a big part of us getting three tries. He has kicked a lot of very important points for us in the past.”
Following Scotland’s clash with Ireland on Saturday, 8 March, they’ll wrap up their Six Nations campaign away to France.
