A mother has been convicted of murdering her two young sons, whose bodies were discovered by their father at the family residence in east London.
Kara Alexander, 47, faced allegations of drowning her sons, Elijah, aged two, and five-year-old Marley, in the bathtub at their home on Cornwallis Road, Dagenham, on December 16, 2022.
Although Alexander claimed that the children drowned while she slept, the prosecution dismissed her account, maintaining that she was responsible for their deaths.
A jury at Kingston Crown Court found her guilty of two counts of murder after a trial.
According to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), post-mortem examinations determined that the boys had either drowned or suffocated.
During the trial, it was revealed that the children’s father was scheduled to care for them that upcoming weekend and grew concerned due to a lack of communication from Alexander.
Upon arriving at the home, she informed him that the children were asleep upstairs, the court was told.
However, when he went upstairs, he discovered the boys’ bodies in the lower bunk of their shared bed, both dressed in pajamas and having passed away several hours earlier, the CPS reported.
Samantha Yelland, a senior crown prosecutor in the CPS London Homicide Unit, stated that the family and friends of Elijah and Marley were left “utterly heartbroken” by their tragic loss.
“It is unimaginable to consider the suffering those poor children endured in their last moments,” Ms. Yelland expressed.
“It is a parent’s duty to protect their children, and Kara Alexander not only failed in that regard but also took away their lives.”
The Metropolitan Police announced that Alexander is set to be sentenced on April 11.
Detective Chief Inspector Paul Waller, who oversaw the investigation, extended his condolences particularly to the boys’ father.
“No parent should endure such a horrific ordeal and then be forced to hear the detailed evidence that led to these events.
“I also want to commend those who were first on the scene—our colleagues and paramedics—who faced this traumatic event firsthand.
“This investigation has been challenging for everyone involved,” he added.
