tribute to George Scharf

George Scharf was one of the early urban sketchers; a German who became a Londoner via the Battle of Waterloo, he drew the city relentlessly as it went through the industrial revolution, choosing shops, building works, streets and everyday people as his subjects. He died in 1860. Above is the present day view of what he drew in 1830, at a time when London Bridge was being finished. Now another huge construction project there is near completion – The Shard.
