The Toronto Blue Jays missed the postseason for the first time in the past three seasons after finishing with a record of 74-88 and last in the American League East.
Although the Blue Jays made the postseason in 2022 and 2023, they were swept in the wild-card round each time.
This offseason has been relatively disappointing for Toronto after it failed to acquire multiple players it was pursuing including Juan Soto, Corbin Burnes and Roki Sasaki.
Though the Blue Jays missed out on those players, they finally broke through by signing outfielder Anthony Santander from the Baltimore Orioles.
Now, one MLB insider is reporting that talks with another prominent free agent are heating up.

“Talks between Pete Alonso and the Blue Jays are ‘advancing,’ per a source with knowledge. Not done yet and no guarantee that it gets there,” SNY insider Andy Martino wrote on X.

The Alonso negotiations have been dragging on for weeks, and there have been reports of him talking to multiple teams.
Although Alonso has played all six seasons of his MLB career with the New York Mets, they don’t appear to be willing to pay the first baseman the money he wants.
In 2024, he played 162 games and batted .240 with 34 home runs, 88 RBIs and a .788 OPS.
The Blue Jays and Alonso will be worth keeping an eye on to see if they can agree on a deal.
