CECA Program Enters Its Third Year: Addressing Essential Technology Gaps in the Energy Sector
The Critical Energy Cybersecurity Accelerator (CECA) program has recently wrapped up its initial pilot phase, shifting its focus toward identifying and addressing crucial technology shortfalls within the energy market. Researchers and cybersecurity experts involved in the program are now engaged in assessing and refining innovative cyber tools that aim to enhance the resilience and security of our electric grid.
Collaboration for a Secure Energy Future
In collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security, and Emergency Response (CESER), CECA plays a pivotal role in advancing new cybersecurity technologies pertinent to the energy industry by conducting thorough evaluations of emerging tools while mitigating market entry obstacles. This initiative is an integral part of the White House’s National Cybersecurity Strategy, driving towards a more secure energy landscape for all citizens.
Insights from Realistic Testing Scenarios
The inaugural track of this program was launched in December 2022; since then, it has yielded significant insights into the reliability and performance potential of cyber solutions under various realistic threat conditions.
“Numerous exciting developments are occurring across national laboratories regarding cybersecurity; however, these advancements are not always optimized for industrial application,” remarked Nik Urlaub, lead scientist for CECA at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). “This recent initiative aims to ensure that emerging technologies from research institutions make a substantial impact on real-world scenarios.”
A Comprehensive Approach to Technology Assessment
This updated focus allows promising technologies to undergo systematic laboratory evaluations reflective of actual energy-critical environments while receiving commercialization assistance along with resources aimed at maximizing industry collaboration. Moreover, these innovations will be assessed both prior to and following implementation against guidelines set forth by DOE’s Technology Readiness Assessment Framework.
Partners Driving Innovation Forward
The CECA initiative is supported by CESER alongside utility partners in conjunction with DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy—with additional sponsorship provided by NREL.
