Russian identity documents seized from soldiers taken prisoner by Ukraine, published on social networks by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Some of these documents were allegedly drawn up to conceal the presence of North Korean troops there. HANDOUT / AFP Of the 12,000 North Korean soldiers deployed since October 2024, around 300 have been killed and 2,700 injured, according to Lee Seong-kweun, a South Korean MP who was informed on January 13 by the intelligence services of Seoul. The personal diary of a soldier from a North Korean unit, who died on the Ukrainian front, and the testimonies of two prisoners reveal disturbing facets of the combat tactics of the troops deployed by Pyongyang in support of the Russian army. In his diary, authenticated by South Korean intelligence services, the soldier writes that to deal with an enemy drone, the North Koreans resort to “human bait”: a soldier comes out of hiding to lure the drone to him, while two of his companions remained hidden. “When the bait stops, the drone hovers and can be shot down,” he writes, with a supporting drawing. But, often, the drone is faster than the two soldiers in ambush and it is the human bait who is shot down. “Even at the cost of my life, I will follow the orders of our supreme leader without hesitation,” wrote the young soldier.
