The New York Mets made a splash in the postseason by making a run to the National League Championship Series, and they followed that up by making another splash in the offseason.
After making the surprising postseason run, the Mets followed up by signing the top free agent in this year’s class Juan Soto to a deal worth $765 million over 15 years.
Along with Soto, the Mets have made several other acquisitions this offseason including relief pitcher Clay Holmes, starting pitcher Frankie Montas, and outfielder Jose Siri.
The Mets payroll had a significant change from the 2024 season, but it is not the change that most people would likely expect.
According to MLB Insider Jon Heyman on ‘X,’ the Mets’ current payroll is down the most from last season despite Soto’s record-breaking $765 million deal.

The Mets’ payroll decreased by almost $78 million from the 2024 season, which is the biggest change in Major League Baseball.
Although the Mets decreased their payroll by $78 million, they still have the fourth-highest payroll in the league behind the Los Angeles Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies, and New York Yankees.
The Mets had multiple players from last year’s team who were or are free agents this offseason, which could be a contributing factor to their payroll reduction.
Nonetheless, most people would likely be surprised to see the Mets have the biggest reduction in payroll after the signing of Soto.
The Mets will take their new and improved roster and try to make their first World Series appearance since 2015 and win their first World Series title since 1986.
