James Beard Award winning chefs and restaurants to know in metro Phoenix
Winning a James Beard Award is one of the highest honors a chef or restaurant can receive. It is basically the Oscars of the food industry.
The Republic
Metro Phoenix’s culinary scene has gotten plenty of national love over the last few years, and 2024 was no exception with 24 metro Phoenix restaurants, bars, chefs and even dishes receiving shout-outs from national media, and that’s not including mentions in Yelp and Opentable lists.
Of all the accolades, seven were named “best,” from best new chefs to best new restaurants, best wine bars and best hotel restaurants. And we even celebrated a local James Beard Award win for Best Chef Southwest.
Here’s a look at all the chefs and restaurants named among the best in the U.S. in 2024.
Chilte’s chef Lawrence “LT” Smith
Chef Lawrence “LT” Smith made Food and Wine’s 13 Best New Chefs list for his playful “new-wave” Mexican-inspired menu.

Mr. Baan’s Bar and Mookata
Mr. Baan’s made The New York Times’ 50 best restaurants list for being one of only three restaurants in the United States that serves mookata, a tableside charcoal grill on which guests cook their own Thai meats and seafood. The Thai-inspired drinks received a nod as well.

Pizzeria Bianco
The New York Times 22 of the Best Pizza Places in the United States shouted out Pizzeria Bianco. New York Times food correspondent Brett Anderson recommended people travel to Phoenix to try his pizzas, especially the Rosa, which he described as a “sublimely austere pizza holding Arizona pistachios, rosemary and singed slices of red onion.” But even more than pizza, the author credited Chris Bianco with establishing “the pizzaiolo-as-pitmaster” persona and spinning “magic from woodfire.”

Rene Andrade of Bacanora
Rene Andrade’s restaurant, Bacanora, was a 2022 finalist for James Beard Best New Restaurant. He was also a semifinalist for Best Chef — Southwest in 2023. And 2024 was his year. He took home the James Beard Award for Best Chef — Southwest.

Sauvage Wine Bar was named one of Esquire’s Best Bars in America. Writer Omar Mamoon described the bungalow bar as “fun” and recommended “a glass of something effervescent (like a pét-nat) to help you party all night.”

Thea
Thea, the rooftop restaurant at restauranteur Sam Fox’s The Global Ambassador, landed on Conde Nast Traveler’s list of The Best New Hotel Restaurants in the World. It wowed the editors with a spring tabbouleh salad ($18) made with ancient grains, stone fruit, pomegranate seeds, snap peas, cucumber, mint and a preserved lemon vinaigrette. They called it “fresh and flavorful.”
