Another one of leading NRL outfit Sydney Roosters’ players, Siua Wong, has revealed that he could make a cross-code switch to rugby union.
The Sydney Roosters have had a close connection with rugby union players in recent years with renowned code hopper and All Blacks legend Sonny Bill Williams having stints with them from 2013 to 2014 as well as in 2020.
Adding to that, former Roosters stars Joseph Suaalii and Joey Manu recently joining rugby union’s ranks with Suaalii already representing the Wallabies on their recent Grand Slam tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland, while Manu has featured for Toyota Verblitz in the Japan Rugby League One competition under the guidance of former All Blacks coaches Steve Hansen and Ian Foster.
Roosters signed ‘Wallabies and Olympic Sevens star’
The Roosters’ close connection to rugby union does not end there as former Wallabies and Olympic Sevens star Mark Nawaqanitawase joined their ranks and featured in some of their NRL matches last season.
And now highly rated rugby league second-row Wong, who has represented Fiji and Tonga at international level, has said he will not rule out a switch to the 15-a-side game despite being contracted to the Roosters until 2026.
Opinion: ‘Brilliant’ Joseph Suaalii proves he has the potential to be ‘the figurehead of Australian rugby’
Wong was born in New Zealand and both Rugby Australia (RA) and New Zealand Rugby (NZR) tried to sign him before he signed a contract extension with the Roosters in 2023 although he would not rule out a cross-code switch in the future.
That would put RA and NZR on high alert in a bid to capture Wong’s signature, especially with the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia looming on the horizon when his current Roosters deal expires.
Played rugby union in high school
Schooled at the famous Scots College in Sydney, who also produced current Wallabies star Andrew Kellaway, Wong – like Suaalii – played rugby union in high school and is far from the finished product at the age of 21.
“There’s always thoughts, but at the moment my full commitment (is to) the Roosters,” Wong told Zero Tackle.
“I think that was one of the main reasons I moved over to Scots because they put me into that school and I’ve loved this club and everything that its about.
“I’m keen to see what the future holds, but at the moment, I’ve just been focused on my (rugby league) career.”
