There was no fairy tale departure for Cambridge head coach Richie Williams on Saturday.
After more than six years at the helm, it was recently confirmed that the weekend’s RFU Championship derby at Bedford Blues would be the Welshman’s final game in charge of the club.
However, the hosting Blues had no room for any sentiment as they ran out 50-7 winners Goldington Road.

Cambridge started the encounter in a positive manner and they went in front midway through the first half when Ben Brownlie – making his 100th appearance for the club – dotted down for a 7-3 advantage.
Bedford battled back to eventually take a 17-7 lead into the break, but it was during the second half that the home team ran away with the encounter.
“It’s been fantastic. I said to the players in the changing room, we did a lot of talking last week – that was great, to get that win at home against Ampthill,” said Williams.
“I hope that’s something that the group can build on, that defensive mindset and that defensive effort.
“That was a tough game up against a very good and very attack-minded Bedford team. If you give them the opportunities and the space that we gave them then they’re going to hurt you.
“Congratulations to Bedford, they’ll be happy with that five points off the back of the loss last week.
“For us, it’s about starting back again in January. It will be strange not having any more games for Cambridge.”
Cambridge, who now have Anthony Allen in interim charge, will take a break from action this weekend before returning to the pitch on 11 January with a home friendly against world champions England Under-20s.
The second-from-bottom side’s next Championship assignment will come seven days later when they play host to a London Scottish outfit that are two places and four points ahead of them.
The two teams are yet to face each other this term, with the reverse fixture scheduled to take place at the Richmond Athletic Ground on 10 May.
