A new report published by the United Nations’ expert panel on biodiversity advocates for a comprehensive approach that considers the interrelationships among five key domains: climate change, biodiversity preservation, food security, human well-being, and water resources. Paula Harrison—a land and water modeling professor at the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology—emphasized during her statement that “we must transcend siloed decision-making.” While earlier studies have explored connections between two or three areas within this framework, this report represents an unprecedented ambition in encompassing all five dimensions simultaneously.
