BRIDGEMAN IMAGES Each year, the Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) Institute, established within the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, publishes a report on the state of democracy in the world. Published in March, the latest revealed that, as of December 31, 2023, 71% of the world’s population (compared to 48% ten years ago) lived in an autocracy. Staffan Ingemar Lindberg, director of the organization, analyzes the current situation. The year 2024, a “super-election year” with votes taking place in 60 countries, is coming to an end. What assessment do you make of it? The overall assessment is negative. Of the 60 countries that have held national elections, 31 are autocracies. I see three categories. There are cases where the impact of elections is ambiguous, like India. The Indian People’s Party (BJP, for Bharatiya Janata Party) lost its majority [en juin] and had to form a coalition government. It is not yet known whether this will lead to a halt to the process of autocratization, which began in 2000.
