Exciting Competition Ahead: Oceania Rugby 7s Tournament in Honiara
This year, the city of Honiara is set to host an exhilarating Oceania Rugby 7s tournament featuring a total of 15 nations, including the Solomon Islands. Scheduled for December 7th and 8th, this dynamic competition promises to be a showcase of skill and sportsmanship.
Participating Nations
The lineup includes well-known rugby powerhouses: Fiji, Tuvalu, Nauru, Australia, Vanuatu, American Samoa, Japan, Samoa, Cook Islands, Kiribati, New Caledonia, Tonga, Niue, Tahiti alongside the hosts. In totality there are 15 teams competing in the Men’s division and 9 teams in the Women’s division.
Breakdown of Teams
Men’s Division: Includes teams from Fiji through to Tahiti. The participating nations will be organized into four groups – Group A with three teams and Groups B through D containing four teams each.
Women’s Division: Comprises nine competing squads such as the Fiji Development Squad alongside others from Vanuatu and American Samoa. These will be divided into three groups for competitive play.
Format of Matches
As confirmed during a press conference on Tuesday when match draws were announced by Oceania Rugby officials:
A total of 58 matches are scheduled over these two action-packed days.
The breakdown includes 22 matches for women and 36 for men, ensuring a robust tournament structure that promises excitement throughout.
Significance to Solomon Islands
George Temahua (President of the Solomon Islands Rugby Union Federation) emphasized during Tuesday’s draw how pivotal this event is for his country—“Hosting the Oceania Rugby 7s brings considerable pride to our nation.” He expressed that it provides an excellent opportunity not only to display their rich cultural heritage but also their unwavering hospitality towards visitors from across the Pacific who come together over their shared passion for rugby.
