Newcastle vs Arsenal: Preview, predictions and lineups

Arsenal are looking to bounce back from two Premier League matches without victory when they visit Newcastle United in Saturday’s early kick-off.

The Gunners, who beat Preston North End 3-0 midweek to reach the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, followed up their disappointing ten-man defeat to Bournemouth with a 2-2 draw against title rivals Liverpool last weekend. Mikel Arteta’s side twice held the lead but settled for a point at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal lost this fixture last season following a controversial Anthony Gordon effort and will be seeking revenge on Saturday as they look to make ground on Manchester City and Liverpool.

Newcastle secured a much-needed victory against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup fourth round midweek having lost to the Blues in the Premier League last weekend. They are without a victory in the league since mid-September and will need the ferocity of the St James’ Park crowd to help them remedy that on Saturday.

Here is 90min’s guide to a tantalising clash on Tyneside.

Anthony Gordon missed the trip to Stamford Bridge last weekend through injury but started against the Blues on Wednesday evening. He featured for 73 minutes, while Lewis Miley also made his comeback from a long-term injury in the closing stages of the victory.

The less encouraging news is that Alexander Isak hobbled off in the second half of the midweek win having opened the scoring, although Eddie Howe was optimistic about his issue. Winger Jacob Murphy missed the clash with Chelsea entirely due to a hamstring problem but Howe has claimed it’s “nothing serious”.

Newcastle are still without a handful of defenders, with Sven Botman, Jamaal Lascelles and Kieran Trippier missing through fitness issues. Matt Targett is currently struggling with illness and has been absent since the start of September, while Callum Wilson will return after the November international break at the other end of the pitch.

Gabriel was the major concern following Liverpool’s visit to north London last weekend as the Brazilian was withdrawn due to a knee injury. However, Arteta has said that he was “much better than expected”, meaning he could feature at the weekend.

Jurrien Timber was also substituted against Liverpool but started the victory over Preston midweek. However, fellow full-back Ben White missed out at Deepdale after “struggling” at the weekend, with his position in the starting XI at Newcastle under threat.

Riccardo Calafiori, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Kieran Tierney all remain sidelined for Arsenal through various injuries, with none of them likely to return before the November international break. There is hope, however, that Martin Odegaard could play against Inter next week.

Arsenal predicted lineup vs Newcastle

Arsenal predicted lineup vs Newcastle (4-2-3-1): Raya; Partey, Saliba, Gabriel, Timber; Rice, Merino; Saka, Trossard, Martinelli; Havertz.

Arsenal were able to rest more of their first-team stars than Newcastle midweek, giving them a slight advantage heading into the weekend’s clash. Injuries could impact Arteta’s starting XI but the Spaniard will be relieved to have William Saliva back for the Premier League after he served a suspension against Liverpool.

Newcastle have the capacity to cause Arsenal issues but the Gunners’ deeper squad and more talented forward line and defensive unit makes them favourites for this one. The St James’ Park crowd will make Arsenal’s life difficult but they should return to winning ways in the Premier League this weekend.

Prediction: Newcastle 0-2 Arsenal
