Portugal is one of the European Union (EU) countries where differences in employment in the various regions are less pronounced, according to data by Eurostat. Italy, Belgium and Romania are the Member States where regional asymmetries are most significant.
According to data released by the statistics office, the employment rate in the community block was 75.3% last year, corresponding to an increase of 0.7 percentage points compared to 2022 and the highest value in the series.
But there are relevant differences between the regions that make up the different Member States. One of Poland’s regions, for example, recorded an employment rate of 86.5%, the highest in the community bloc. While one of Italy’s regions had an employment rate of 48.4%, the lowest in the European Union.
In Portugal, while the North region had an employment rate of 76.8%, the Algarve surpassed the 80% mark.
Still, Portugal is one of the European Union countries where regional differences are less pronounced, according to Eurostat, along with Denmark, Finland and the Netherlands. In contrast, Italy recorded the most significant regional disparities, followed by Belgium and Romania, indicates the statistics office.
Eurostat adds that “all Eastern European countries and the Baltic countries, as well as Denmark, Ireland, Spain and Sweden, reported higher employment rates in the capital city region.” In Germany, Belgium and Austria recorded some of the lowest employment rates in these regions.
