Ambassador of the European Union to Montenegro Oana Cristina Popa was decorated today by President of Montenegro Jakov Milatovic with the Order of the Montenegrin Flag of the second degree.
Presenting the Order to Ambassador Popa at the Blue Palace presidential residence, President Milatovic said: “Today, here in Cetinje, I awarded the Ambassador of the European Union, Ms. Popa, the Order of the Montenegrin Flag of the Second Degree, for her efforts to bring Montenegro closer to the European Union. The European future of Montenegro and our full membership in the European Union in 2028 is our common endeavour, which we must accomplish together with the institutions of the European Union. The doors are wide open for us, and it is our responsibility in the coming period to pass through those doors as soon as possible.”
Ambassador Popa stated: “It was an honour for me to receive the Order of the Montenegrin Flag today, as a recognition for my activity during the past four years as Ambassador of the European Union to Montenegro, and also for the institutions I represent, the European Commission and the European External Action Service. I would like to address a special thanks to the President of Montenegro, His Excellency Jakov Milatovic for conferring this award to me and I would also like to thank Montenegrin people, because one of the main aims of my mandate was to bring the EU closer to the people. I hope that, together with my team, we have succeeded to do that. I have travelled far and wide in Montenegro, to many places, visited many communities, and we have had very honest discussions about what the EU means and what EU membership means, and I think that Montenegro has made an incredible leap in the past few years towards the EU and that the prospect of EU membership has become a reality. I look forward to seeing more progress on the EU path of Montenegro. While the enlargement as a policy will remain a priority for the new Commission, I also encourage all the stakeholders and all the decision makers in Montenegro to keep the focus on the EU path, because this is a reality that can be achieved very fast if everybody focuses towards this aim. I would like to thank everybody again for your friendship, for your cooperation. I take with me fantastic memories, big challenges that we have navigated together, but, definitely, Montenegro will remain in my heart.”
