“The government, parliament, and the entire negotiating structure are committed to accelerating obligations with the goal of closing the first set of negotiating chapters by the end of the year,” said the Minister of European Affairs, Maida Gorčević, during a meeting with the newly appointed Ambassador of the European Union to Montenegro, Johann Sattler.
Gorčević informed Sattler about the work plan for finalising reforms in all negotiating chapters. In addition to activities leading towards meeting the final benchmarks, Montenegro is also preparing for the responsibilities and opportunities that will arise after the full EU membership, particularly by strengthening administrative capacities, emphasised Gorčević.
Ambassador Sattler welcomed the work on obtaining the IBAR as a starting point for a new dynamic phase of negotiations.
He stated that the Ministry of European Affairs and the Government of Montenegro can count on the full support and cooperation of the EU Delegation, as well as himself personally, in the coming period. As he noted, the Delegation will continue to be a partner and a hub for cooperation with the EU, but it is essential to intensify communication with the member states in the forthcoming period.
Ambassador Sattler and Minister Gorčević also exchanged views regarding the visit of the Working Party on Enlargement and Countries Negotiating Accession to the EU (COELA), which will be part of an official visit to Montenegro in the coming days.
They agreed that organising meetings between COELA members and representatives of the government, parliament, and the civil sector represents a good example of cooperation with EU member states and provides an opportunity to present achieved results and further plans on the path towards the EU.
Gorčević and Sattler also exchanged opinions on the Growth Plan for the Western Balkans, agreeing that this initiative brings many benefits both for Montenegro and the region. As they pointed out, the funds from the Growth Plan will be a reward for the reforms carried out and will contribute to improving the citizens’ quality of life.
