“And you don’t need to worry, these 29% (of the projected election result for the FPO) are well invested. They are an excellent investment for the Freedom Party, because one thing has happened today, we have actually opened this door. We have opened the door to a new era. We are now really going to write this new chapter in Austrian history together. We have internalized the idea that the people come first and then the Chancellor. I had the feeling from the others today, during the discussions – I don’t know, they were in a bit of a state of shock and acted as if this election hadn’t happened. I’ll give you two or three more days to think about it. Then we hope that you will come to your senses. It would also be in your own interest, I would like to say.”
Projections show the FPO in first place but far from having an absolute majority, meaning it will need to find a coalition partner in parliament to form a stable government, if President Alexander Van der Bellen asks it to.
Led by the 55-year-old Herbert Kickl, the FPO won 28.8% of the vote, ahead of the OVP on 26.3%, and the centre-left Social Democrats (SPO) on 21.1%, according to a projection based on nearly all the vote by pollster Foresight for broadcaster ORF, a slightly bigger victory margin than final polls had indicated.
The party received warm words from allies in Europe, where the FPO forms part of a right-wing group inside the European Parliament led by France’s far-right National Rally (RN).
