Just a year after he arrived at FC Barcelona, Oriol Romeu has left the club returning to his former employers Girona, it has been officially confirmed.
“FC Barcelona and Girona FC have reached an agreement for the loan of player Oriol Romeu until June 30, 2025,” the statement from the club read.
Romeu was signed by Barça last year as a cost-effective reinforcement for the No. 6 position following the departure of captain Sergio Busquets.
While he began well, the Spaniard’s form took a nosedive a few months into the campaign and he never really made his way back into Xavi’s plans.
A move back to Girona had been touted early in the summer but recent reports had suggested that new manager Hansi Flick was impressed by Romeu and was ready to keep him at the club.
However, in the background, Girona were seemingly quietly working on taking Romeu back, with a breakthrough happening this week.
Romeu flew back from the US pre-season tour this past Saturday and has now completed his move back to Girona from Barcelona, returning on a season-long loan deal.
