An Indian television, Firstpost has reported the upcoming #EndBadGovernance protest scheduled to hold from August 1 to 10.

The television network stated that youths across Africa are becoming fed up of the situation in the continent and are expressing their cries through protests.

“Now let’s turn our attention to Africa; a wave of protests is spreading throughout the continent. It began in Kenya with protests against their budget, or the finance bill as they call it,” the presenter said.

“Then they spread across the border to neighbouring Uganda and now Nigeria is gearing up to become the third protest hotspot. Young Nigerians are preparing to march against the government.

“They plan to hold peaceful protests on the 1st of August and this has scared the Nigerian establishment. The county’s president, Bola Tinubu issued a warning on Monday. He said the protests were the work of some sinister people and he asked Nigerians to not join.

“The next day, Nigeria’s police chief joined the chorus; he said the protests were ill-advised and that the police would not sit back and watch.

“Two days later, the Nigerian military chimed in; a military spokesperson said the protests may lead to anarchy. He said the army would not allow Nigeria to spiral out of control. You can see how rattled the authorities are. Every arm of the government is trying to stop the protest and not just with threats.”

While the government has continued to discourage Nigerians from going ahead with the protests, many youths and civil society groups have vowed to go ahead with the planned protests.

Last week, the Nigerian police announced the deployment of 4,200 personnel in the Federal Capital Territory alone in preparation for the protests.

The Nigerian government has however promised to ensure that the rights of protesters are respected. However, it is notorious for violating human rights.

Allegations of government forces killing protesters at the Lekki toll gate in Lagos during the 2020 #EndSARS protests have been persistent, despite initial denials. However, evidence has since confirmed that live ammunition was used, and a recent ECOWAS court ruling has indicted the government for human rights violations, further substantiating the claims.
