Grassroots Rugby camps have returned to Port Alberni.
The camps take place throughout the summer at the Black Sheep Rugby Club, at the top of Argyle Street, and are coached by Black Sheep players. Camps are free of charge and are held on a drop-in basis, meaning kids don’t have to commit to a full season of rugby.
Coach Bradley Marchand says it’s a good way for new players to “dip their toes” into the sport of rugby.
“We encourage people to give it a try, even if they are unsure,” he said.
Camps for kids aged six to eight take place from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Camps for kids aged nine to 13 take place in the afternoon, from 12:30–2:30 p.m. On Wednesdays, coaches offer a special evening camp for older kids aged 14-18 between 6:30–8 p.m. Camps run Monday to Friday until Aug. 23.
Grassroots Rugby will also be bringing a pair of camps to Bamfield on Aug. 14-16.
“We usually start with a warm-up or an obstacle course,” said Marchand. “We teach kids a drill, then play some games focused around that drill. And we end it with a mini rugby game.”
Rugby games are touch or flag rugby, meaning there is no contact or tackling.
Participants are asked to bring their own water and snacks. Cleats are encouraged, but not necessary.
Donations towards the program can be sent via e-transfer at [email protected]. More information can be found on Facebook at BC Grassroots Rugby-Port Alberni.
